Chocolate and Caffeine

My News-Press article of February 19 dealt with the anti-oxidants in dark chocolate.  Some readers have contacted me because I did not mention the caffeine in chocolate.  The article was not intended to address caffein but I thought it would be good to talk about it.  Yes, there is a small amount of caffeine in chocolate, from 1-10 mg per ounce, depending on the type.  Compared with coffee and soft drinks which have 55 mg and up this is minmal, but for someone who is hypersensitve to caffeine it deserves consideration.

Fitness On The Move announces partnership with Island Coast Pediatrics

Island Coast Pediatrics is a local group of Pediatricians in Lee County for over 18 years, with offices in: Ft. Myers, Cape Coral and Bonita Springs (soon to be Estero).  They have been committed to caring for the Newborn, Child and Adolescent children of Southwest Florida for over 18 years.  They recently announced plans to roll out a new Employee Wellness Program, beginning January 2008. This new health incentive program is targeted to get their seventy employees active for the New Year. Joining forces with Fitness On The Move Lifestyle Center, Island Coast Pediatrics will offer a new employee benefit of a company sponsored wellness and exercise program aimed at improving employees overall health and fitness. Additionally, they hope to reduce employee illnesses, enhance employee productivity and spark  healthy lifestyle changes.

“Our employees at Island Coast Pediatrics have given so much to our patients and community over the years, so we decided to give back to them” said Dr. Jose Padilla, MD, a managing partner with Island Coast Pediatrics.  In addition, “we feel strong about working with Fitness On The Move because of their continued involvement with other area companies.”

Island Coast Pediatrics will reimburse employees a significant portion of gym membership fees, after employees meet certain wellness criteria over several months of regular exercise.  In addition, the company will jump start the new Employee Wellness Program with a three-month fitness challenge – awarding participants opportunities for excellent prize money for the most improved.

Fitness On The Move has been serving fitness needs of Lee County for over 12 years.  The health club was instrumental in establishing in-house wellness programs for other local companies such as: Chico’s, AccuData, and InterOp Technologies.  Fitness On The Move is located at 13010 Metro Parkway in Ft. Myers.

“If we can make a difference in the health & well-being of just one employee, it will all be worth the efforts,” said Holly Velez, RN, BSM, Practice Administrator for Island Coast Pediatrics.   Holly also has a vision to incorporate better nutrition and fitness for overweight kids through fun education and physical challenges for the children of Island Coast Pediatrics and Lee County area as well.

Blogging for Health

Keeping a blog is a great way to “get lean” energetically. Any time that you can move energy out of your body in a healthy and productive way it is very powerful. But blogging allows you to take that a step further. When you blog you are actually creating something through your words, a work of art if you will. And so the point is not to just move your energy around, but rather to do something really great with it. This allows you to actually not only move blocked energy out of your body, but to transmute it into something else….a poem, an essay, a journal entry, an article, a letter….and then share it with the world. This is the power of self expression.

Try it! Blogs are free and truly no more difficult than emailing.

All the best,
